With cases of COVID-19 identified in the Washington metropolitan region, The Capital Area Food Bank is identifying and planning for ways in which our community may be impacted in the coming weeks and months. As the area’s largest hunger relief organization, the Capital Area Food Bank has significant regional infrastructure and storage capacity that can be mobilized quickly to assist those who may be in need of food, whether due to supply chain interruptions, inability to leave the home due to illness, inadequate funds to purchase food for multiple weeks, or other factors. We are actively coordinating with our network of 450+ local nonprofit organizations, as well as regional emergency preparedness authorities including DC’s VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) and DC’s Department of Human Services, about ways we can leverage our infrastructure if needed. Conversations are also underway with other regional planning authorities in Maryland and Virginia. These are some important things that we are doing to keep our environment a healthy one.   While we appreciate your support, please do stay home if you are unwell. Extra cleaning steps are being taken in every part of our warehouse. We will have everyone wash hands as they enter the warehouse and then use gloves when handling all food. With an anticipated increased need during this time we are relying heavily on volunteers to help get food out to the over 400,000 clients in the DMV area. Join us to volunteer in our warehouse by signing up through our online calendar. If you can’t make it to our warehouse, help us by donating to our Digital Food Drive. Together we can make sure every family has enough food on the table during this challenging situation.
